2018 was a busy, exciting, occasionally disappointing but significant year for the band. Whilst it may not have been our most successful year on the contest stage and, unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to a few players, it was also a year of milestones and new beginnings. The biggest milestone was finally managing to secure a new band room, which we are currently in the process of developing to turn it into a great space for both the band and the community. Excitingly, this new space will also enable us to develop a Brass Academy, which we are hoping to launch in early 2019. Other highlights from 2018 include a hugely successful summer season, a fantastic concert with Chris Hoban to commemorate the WWI centenary and welcoming our own Little Drummer Boys - Adam and Harry - to the senior band. Adam and Harry joined us on percussion just in time for the SWBBA Annual Championships in November and were absolute stars on stage. We look forward to having them with us throughout 2019.
As we return to the band room following a short break between Christmas and New Year, we are looking ahead to what lies in store for 2019. January is always a quiet month in terms of outings, but it’s a time when we turn our attention to the WEBBA Regional Championships that take place in early March. No doubt we will soon be busy focusing on this year’s Second Section test piece - Darrol Barry’s Rise of the Phoenix. We are also looking ahead to our next concert, which is taking place in the Manor Pavilion on Friday 15th February. The concert, which is organised each year by the Sidmouth Lions Club, will feature the band with some guest performers. Tickets are on sale at the Pavilion’s Box Office, which is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00-14:00. Drop in or order your tickets by calling 01395 514413.
It’s hard to believe that we’re already fast approaching the start of our 2019 summer season. It’s been a busy and eventful spring, with the highlight being our win in the Second Section at the West of England Regional Championships in March. The win earns us a place at the National Finals, which will take place in Cheltenham in mid-September, as well as promotion back up into the First Section in January 2020.
We are currently busy preparing for our season of concerts on Sunday evenings in Connaught Gardens. Weather permitting, we will be there every Sunday from 8pm from 26th May until 1st September. Concerts are free, with a collection in aid of band funds.
If you’re looking ahead to your summer plans, a key date for your diary will be Saturday 17th August, when we will be holding our Last Night of the Proms concert. More details will be available soon, including when and where you can buy your tickets.
The band’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 16th July at 7.30pm. The meeting will take place in the band’s new headquarters, which is the St. Francis Church Hall, Bennetts Hill, Sidmouth, EX10 9XH. All welcome.
